Strange email baffles jilted business manager

Strange email baffles jilted business manager

Meet Kathleen Ciulla. She's a hair stylist and manages a place called Salon Picasso in Carefree.

Ciulla says she recently got a call from a man calling himself nick khan, a salesman who wanted Ciulla to advertise in his new magazine called Desert Secrets, a publication he was starting up.

"We'd be absolutely crazy not to do this," Ciulla said.

The cost for the ad?

"Roughly around $1500 was the cost of the ad," Ciulla said.

It was a lot of money but Ciulla says everyone in the salon kicked in about $100 to pay for the $1500 ad, but that wasn't a problem.

"We were excited it was all done and we were told it would go to print on October 15," she said.

Investors finally overcame early confusion to close the day at record levels. The market rallied on this morning's PPI report, only to dive into negative territory on the heels of a weak retail sales report. Word on the floor is that the dramatic late day rally was primarily the result of short covering as many traders are attempting to "pick a top".

Official PlayStation Mag Shut Down

Official PlayStation Mag Shut Down

Sony announced this morning that Sony Computer Entertainment America and Ziff-Davis have "mutually agreed" to "discontinue production" on Official PlayStation Magazine. The wording on the release was vague -- kind of left open the possibility that the magazine would be reborn as an unofficial book -- but as it turns out, the mag is indeed being shut down.

Well, that sucks. OPM wasn't just a shill for Sony, it was one of the best gaming magazines around -- well-designed, intelligent, readable. It also embodied one of the characteristics I like most about gaming publications -- they sent me money. Until recently, I mean.

The reason for the split? Sony's part of the deal was the distribution of official demo discs along with the mag, but with PS3 and PSP they're going to concentrate on demo downloads through their PlayStation Store online service.

Plastic Is Popular This Holiday Season

Plastic Is Popular This Holiday Season

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 14, 2006 -- Shoppers are suppressing the stress of purchasing the perfect present thanks to the evolution of the gift card. According to a BizRate Research study, conducted for leading comparison shopping search site Shopzilla (www.shopzilla.com), a resounding 92% of online shoppers believe that gift cards eliminate the risk involved with holiday gift-giving. Also, four out of five agree that gift cards are great last minute gifts. E-Marketer estimated that $18.8 billion was spent on gift cards last holiday season, a number that will likely increase this year.

Aside from alleviating the agony of buying gifts, gift cards are popular with gift receivers as well. In fact 40% of survey participants prefer to receive gift cards over actual gifts, compared to 21% who disagree.

Robots are coming to Humboldt County

Robots are coming to Humboldt County

Nationwide, new jobs are being created through efforts to attract, start up, and expand businesses that research, develop, manufacture, and rely on sensing and robotics. Autonomous technology is a general term for a product or machine using sensing and/or robotics to address a wide array of challenging, real world problems of practical and economic importance.

A good example is California's Yuba-Sutter region. With unemployment rates consistently among the top ten highest in the nation, incomes below the state average, two major floods (1986 and 1997), and nine wildfires, the region was also hit by Rand McNally and Money magazine, when they twice named the region "the worst place to live in the nation." This demoralizing label brought the region's key stakeholders together to commit to develop and implement an economic development strategy they called, "Blueprint for Success," and to form the Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corp.
